You can also play the game through the itch.io PC version, the game isn't locked to Steam on PC.
But if you play the itch.io version you can't get pets, because they're only available on Steam. Which sucks, since Steam has been a known health risk for some users for over a year and Valve have not just consistently been refusing to fix it, but have made the problem worse by blocking the only safe workaround. So yeah, some of us don't get the option of having pets, which sucks.

this was a bad purchase! I bought the game and it only downloaded a bunch of files and no game.
Those files are the game. You have to extract them from the zip file, then launch the game with a file called "Among Us" or "Among Us.exe"
It's easier if you just add the game to Steam with the key on the download page.
